CalFire San Diego will suspend all permits for outdoor fire burning in residential areas in San Diego County, authorities said Thursday.

The suspension takes effect at 8 a.m. Saturday and prohibits the outdoor burning of yard waste such as branches and leaves at private homes, CalFire officials said.

“Due to the heightened fire danger, we are suspending all burning permits effective June 1,” said Tony Mecham, unit and fire chief. “This action is essential to protect our communities and resources during this time of heightened danger.”

Since January 1, firefighters have responded to more than 1,250 wildfires across the state.

While outdoor burning of yard waste by homeowners is no longer permitted, Cal Fire is asking residents to further prepare for wildfires by staying at least 100 feet away from all homes and buildings on their property and being prepared to evacuate in the event of an emergency.
