Re-register with the SMS platform for safety alerts for parents and guardians

The parent and guardian SMS platform safety alert subscription will expire at the end of May. Because June 1 falls on a weekend, currently enrolled students will receive an SMS notification with renewal instructions on Monday, June 3. Parents and guardians who wish to retain SMS alerts for the new school year will need to re-enroll beginning June 4.

Parents and guardians have two options for receiving safety alerts: voluntarily registering in the SMS system or downloading the EagleEye app and enabling push notification settings. With either option, notifications will contain the same information that students, teachers and staff receive.

How to register – step-by-step instructions:

  1. Parents and guardians of current, active students should visit the Family Safety Texts website and enter their student’s MUID number.
  2. Once submitted, the authentication process will confirm (or reject) the request and provide further instructions on how to register your mobile number.
  3. After receiving the SMS confirmation of your registration, your mobile phone number is immediately activated and you will receive SMS messages with security alerts in the future.

To stop the messages at any time, parents and guardians can text “STOP” in response to a safety alert from Marquette.

Parents and guardians must register for this voluntary service annually.

To comply with federal privacy laws, Marquette Central requires parents or others to provide their Student’s MUID number and Marquette Central Access Number (MCAN) to discuss your student’s information over the phone. If you do not have these numbers, contact your student.

Why do parents and guardians have to re-subscribe to safety SMS notifications every year?

This process ensures that parents and guardians do not receive messages when their students graduate or withdraw from the university. (The university has other list management protocols in place to ensure students, faculty, and staff receive accurate information when there are changes in enrollment or employment status.) Enrolled parents will receive a message informing them of the process and encouraging them to re-enroll.

Why are there multiple SMS numbers from which the alarms are sent?

What triggers a security alert SMS?

Marquette University Police sends security alert via SMS only in case of acute threat to the campus or significant police presenceOccasionally an alert may be sent if there is a building or weather related problem.

Text alerts inform the campus community of immediate steps to maintain safety and generally fall into one of the following categories:

  • Active threats – be careful: Incidents that require members of the campus community to be cautious and aware of their surroundings. Examples include armed robberies and shootings without a victim.
  • Ongoing active threats: Indicates emergency situations that are currently developing and likely to develop further. Typically includes instructions to seek shelter or avoid areas. Examples include severe weather, fires and hazardous situations, and active shootings.
  • Reactions from campus facilities: Notifications of building closures and evacuations, typically due to utility outages and fire alarms.
  • Strong police presence: Indicates an incident on or near campus that requires multiple patrol cars and/or emergency vehicles; asks community members to avoid the area. Used when there is no threat to campus.
  • Updates – Issue resolved: Used to indicate that there is no further threat to campus. Examples include suspects in custody, secured incident sites, and expired severe weather warnings.

What does NOT trigger an SMS alert?

Because MUPD is a commissioned police force, it responds to many incidents on a daily basis that do not pose a threat to campus and therefore do not warrant a text alert. MUPD maintains a daily log of all crimes or serious incidents that occur within its patrol district, which extends several blocks off campus.

MUPD does not normally issue a security alert when it arrests one or more individuals and the threat of imminent danger to members of the Marquette community has been mitigated by the arrest. An exception may be made when there is a significant police presence at the scene or in an investigation area that the public is asked to avoid.

Why don’t we receive safety SMS alerts about notable safety situations in other parts of the city?

Marquette University Police only issue safety alerts for incidents within their patrol district that pose an immediate threat to campus. Milwaukee Police, Milwaukee Fire Department, Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, and other emergency management agencies respond to and report on issues throughout the city and county. There are also many media outlets in the city that regularly report breaking news.

To help you stay safe wherever you travel, live or work, the university offers a self-defense program, personal safety awareness training and an active shooter presentation so everyone can learn important skills that will be useful in off-campus situations.

Why don’t parents receive emails with security alerts after sending the text message?

Email information informs residents and workers on campus of additional safety notices or of suspects or vehicle details that could assist police in an investigation. All emails with safety alerts are posted online in Marquette todayand alerts may be updated with new information as it becomes available. If interested, parents and guardians can find more information by visiting this Marquette Today page or by visiting the MUPD Twitter account.
