A police officer who was stabbed in a broad daylight attack in downtown Sydney showed “tremendous courage” by chasing his attacker despite his injuries, the New South Wales Premier said.

Elvis Poa, 35, remains in hospital in a stable condition after being stabbed near Hyde Park early Sunday afternoon.

He and another officer were conducting traffic enforcement operations at the corner of Castlereagh Street and Park Street shortly after 1 p.m. when they were approached by the 35-year-old suspected attacker.

The man allegedly pulled out a 30 cm long kitchen knife and stabbed Constable Poa two to three times in the back of the head.

He fled and was pursued by the injured officer and a policewoman along Park Street into Hyde Park, where the officers ordered him to drop the knife.

Additional officers arrived and the man was shot with a taser before he was taken into custody, police said.

“The officer involved showed tremendous courage,” Prime Minister Chris Minns told reporters.

“Not only to be the victim of an alleged attack, but also to arrest the person who is alleged to have committed the crime.”
