The incident occurred at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

LONDON – One person has died after being sucked into the running turbine engine of a plane at Amsterdam International Airport, officials said.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced on Wednesday that a “person landed in a running aircraft engine” at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on a plane bound for Billund, Denmark, according to KLM.

“Today a fatal incident occurred at Schiphol in which a person got caught in a running aircraft engine,” KLM said after the incident. “Unfortunately, this person died. It was flight KL1341, bound for Billund. We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol.”

Officials did not immediately release the identity of the person killed, nor did they say whether it was a passenger, employee or passerby.

Schiphol handles around 72 million passengers annually and is the third largest airport in Europe.

Authorities said they are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the incident and will release more information as soon as it becomes available.
