Person dies after falling into jet engine at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol | Aviation news

The death occurred on the tarmac in front of the hub terminal as the KLM flight was preparing to depart for Denmark.

One person died at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport when he fell into the rotating turbine blades of a passenger plane taking off, authorities said.

The death occurred as KLM flight KL1341 was preparing to take off for Billund, Denmark, on the airport tarmac.

“Today an … incident occurred at Schiphol in which a person became entangled in a running aircraft engine,” KLM Royal Dutch Airlines said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, the person has died,” KLM said, without revealing the identity of the victim. “The circumstances are currently being investigated,” the statement continued.

The Dutch border police, which is responsible for security at the Netherlands’ largest airport, said the passengers had been removed from the plane and an investigation had been launched.

The aircraft involved is a short-haul Embraer jet used by KLM’s Cityhopper service, which offers flights to other nearby destinations such as London, Dutch news reports said.

A picture released by public broadcaster NOS showed the plane surrounded by fire engines and ambulances next to the departure terminals.

“Terrible news about a fatal accident today at Schiphol,” said Infrastructure Minister Mark Harbers on X. “My condolences go out to the relatives of the victim and the people who witnessed the accident,” he added.

Schiphol has strict security measures in place and accidents are rare at the busy airport, which, according to airport figures, handled around 5.5 million passengers last month alone.
