Officials say escaped monkey in South Carolina will be killed by homeowner

A monkey that escaped from its habitat and was on the loose for several days was shot and killed by a homeowner, officials say. Authorities initially said Bradley, the 15-year-old Japanese macaque, was safely captured in the Walterboro area on Monday. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said the monkey’s owner called animal control on Thursday after he escaped. “Animal control and the Sheriff’s Office have received numerous tips regarding Bradley’s whereabouts, but due to the attention this situation has garnered on social media and news channels, people trying to see Bradley are unfortunately complicating the owner’s efforts to capture him,” CCAS Director Laura Clark said. On Monday, animal control said Bradley was safely found. However, on Wednesday, officials confirmed that a homeowner shot the monkey when it began attacking his dog. “Colleton County initially assisted the owner in locating the missing animal. However, no Colleton County personnel or resources were involved in this incident. “We have no information about the incident other than what the owner told us,” said Meagan Utsey, Colleton County Deputy County Administrator.
