Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sing the Mariah Carey-Whitney Houston duet

At the 2024 Met Gala on Monday, Wicked costars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo serenaded guests with a rendition of “When You Believe,” the legendary duet popularized by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

Grande’s show-stopping performance (she literally closed the event) began with fellow performers carrying the singer across the room to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur, where she burst into “Into You” from 2016. Dangerous woman. Grande also performed “Yes, And?” » and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” from his new album Eternal sunas well as “7 Rings” by Thanks, Next.

Grande shouted out Erivo in one of her social media captions: “Thank you to the divine and magical @cynthiaerivo for finally joining me and lighting up the museum brighter than any star in the sky. you and sing with you as always. I love you !”

“When you believe” was written by Wicked songwriter Stephen Schwartz for the 1998 animated film The prince of Egypt, which tells the story of Moses from the biblical book of Exodus. In the film, Tzipporah (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Miriam (Sally Dworsky) perform the song, while Carey and Houston’s version plays over the end credits (and later became a radio hit).

The song ultimately won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999, beating Diane Warren (for Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”). Armageddon) and Randy Newman (for Babe: Dirty in the City“That should do”).

Erivo and Grande star in two-part adaptation of hit Broadway musical Wicked by director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the heights, Intensify). In the Wizard of Oz prequel, Erivo plays Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West created by Idina Menzel on stage, while Grande plays Glinda, the “good witch” first played by Kristin Chenoweth on Broadway.

The films will also star Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum (who also attended the Met Gala), as well as Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater and Bowen Yang.

Villain: Part One hits theaters on November 27, 2024, while Second part is scheduled to be released on November 26, 2025.
