There is nothing a Jersey girl can’t do.

That sentiment came true when a 29-year-old Garden State woman saved her own life after being hit by a train in early May.

Lisa Fitzgerald was struck by a New Jersey Transit (NJT) train at the Morristown station in northern New Jersey on May 5. Lisa’s stepmother, Stacie Weil-Fitzgerald, told Fox News Digital that it was “pouring rain” the night of the horrific accident and Lisa was waiting for a train to take her to New York City.

“A freak accident… somehow she ended up under the train,” Weil-Fitzgerald explained. “Her leg was immediately severed.”

The mother explained that the train was still pulling into the station when Lisa was hit. She was hit by the last carriages of the train.

“She pushed herself onto the platform and waited on the tracks,” Weil-Fitzgerald described. “She crawled over herself, the poor thing.”

“She said, ‘I was so scared my hair would get caught in there and it would suck me back in,'” she added. “So she waited until the train stopped. She got up on the platform and started screaming for help.”

Weil-Fitzgerald told Fox News Digital that some people at the Morristown train station simply walked past her and ignored her screams. Lisa was only helped when an NJT employee noticed her.

“Her leg was completely severed. She was bleeding to death… she started screaming for help,” Weil-Fitzgerald explained. “And someone who works for New Jersey Transit, the ticket inspector, came over and completely freaked out.”

“She said, ‘You have ten seconds to help me.’ And she started screaming and counting, ‘One, two, three,'” she described. “And luckily, two Morristown police officers heard it.”

Lisa tried to tie her own leg with her t-shirt until police officers helped her. The Morristown Department of Public Safety (MDPS) confirmed the incident in a Facebook post.

“Upon touching the woman, (an officer) noticed that her left leg was severed from her body just above the knee and she was bleeding profusely,” the MDPS statement said. “He immediately applied a tourniquet and tightened it until the bleeding apparently stopped.”

Officers from the Morristown Fire Department (MFD) also arrived to assist the officers and recover the missing leg. Lisa’s leg was found under the train and turned over to medical personnel.

“The actions of Officers Hollain, Cerrick and Moran undoubtedly saved this woman’s life,” the officers added. “They demonstrated unwavering composure, which enabled quick and effective decisions and provided comfort and support to the victim.”

Weil-Fitzgerald told Fox News Digital that even in this tragic situation, Lisa’s radiant personality shone through.

“She was fully conscious and joking,” she said. “She said, ‘Please take me to the hospital. I’m not going to die like this.'”

Lisa was taken to the hospital and treated, but her leg could not be sewn back on. A GoFundMe campaign set up by her sister has raised over $77,000 so far.

The tragic incident occurred two weeks before Lisa’s 30th birthday party. The birthday plans were scrapped and a “glamputation” party was thrown instead.

“We decorated the hospital and had a big celebration for her,” Weil-Fitzgerald said. “And she’s in such a good mood. With her GoFundMe campaign, people have been so helpful and so amazing. It really makes us feel good.”

Lisa, one of eight siblings, was called the “Miracle of Morristown” for surviving the incident and showing such resilience and courage during her recovery.

“She’s incredible,” said the proud mother. “She never stopped smiling.”
