Police: Suspect and bystander injured after shooting at Colerain Township Kroger

SO IT’S WITH BREAKING NEWS AND THIS BREAKING NEWS TONIGHT. AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE NEED TO BE HOSPITALIZED AFTER A POLICE-INVOLVED SHOOTING AT A KROGER STORE IN COLERAIN TOWNSHIP. THANKS FOR BEING HERE WITH US AT 6 PM. I’M MIKE DARDIS AND GOOD EVENING. I’M SHEREE PAOLELLO. IT ALL STARTED TODAY AROUND 4 PM. IT HAPPENED AT THE NORTH GATE KROGER, RIGHT OFF SPRINGDALE ROAD AND COLERAIN AVENUE, A VERY BUSY AREA. WE HAVE LIVE TEAM COVERAGE FOR YOU TONIGHT. DAISY KERSHAW AND TODD OF WLWT NEWS FIVE – ON THE SITE. LET’S START TONIGHT WITH TODD, WHO JUST TALKED TO EVEN MORE WITNESSES. HELLO, TODD. YES, I’VE BEEN TALKING A LOT IN THE LAST HOUR. AN HOUR AND A HALF. SHERRY AND MIKE, AND, YOU KNOW, YOU MENTIONED THESE TWO PEOPLE. WE CAN TELL YOU THAT THEY HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS SUSPECTS. BOTH WERE SHOT AND TAKEN TO AREA HOSPITALS. WE DON’T KNOW THEIR CONDITION. WE DON’T KNOW THEIR NAMES, AND WE DON’T KNOW THEIR MOTIVATIONS AT THIS TIME. BUT WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT THIS VERY BUSY KROGER STORE HERE ON SPRINGDALE ROAD IN COLERAIN TOWNSHIP IN THE 3600 BLOCK IS ACTUALLY IN A LOCKDOWN MODE IN RESPECT OF THE INVESTIGATION THAT IS NOW UNDERWAY. THIS ALL STARTED THIS AFTERNOON AROUND 4:00 PM. REPORT OF SOME KIND OF ACTIVE Shooter SITUATION NEAR ONE OF THE ENTRANCES. A WITNESS, A WOMAN WHO WORKS IN THE STORE. YOU’LL HEAR FROM HER IN A SECOND, SAID IT WAS MORE LIKE ON THE FIFTH THIRD SIDE. THERE IS A BANK IN THIS BUSY KROGER STORE. AND THAT’S WHERE THIS ALL TOOK PLACE. SO INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE STORE. THERE WAS SOME KIND OF PURSUIT AND A SHOOTING INVOLVED BY POLICE. AND AGAIN, THE TWO PEOPLE WERE, UM, HIT BY BULLETS, IDENTIFIED AS SUSPECTS AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. THAT’S WHAT WE KNOW TONIGHT. NO INDICATION OF A MOTIVE, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS CAUSED A TREMENDOUS ANXIETY, FEAR AND PANIC TO THE PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE KROGER STORE AND TO THE SHOPPERS. FIRST, LET’S LISTEN TO WHAT ONE OF THESE EMPLOYEES HAS TO SAY. IT SOUNDED LIKE FIREWORKS, BUT I SAW A LADY BACKING HER CAR AND THEN I LOOKED TO THE RIGHT AND ALL I SAW WAS A MAN WITH A GUN POINTING DOWN AND THEN I JUST START RUNNING, FLYING DOWN. AND I’M STILL RUNNING. I WALKED TO THE BISTRO AREA. I HEARED MORE THAN TEN SHOTS AND IT STILL GOING ON. AND THEN I JUST FLOWED OUT THE DOOR AND EVERYONE JUST RUN OUT. YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THIS YOUNG WOMAN, MICAH LEWIS, WAS FEELING AND EXPERIENCING WHILE THE ORDE WAS TAKING PLACE. I TALKED TO SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WHO WERE INSIDE. A GENTLEMAN WHO WAS SHOPPING SAID HE JUST FELL ON THE FLOOR AND PRAYED THE SHOOTER WOULDN’T COME DOWN THE AISLE HE WAS IN AND SINCE THEN WE HAVE ALL SHOPPING AT KROGER STORES IN THAT AREA. IT’S SUCH A BIG FOOTPRINT WE CAN ALL IMAGINE WHAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE. AND I’LL CLOSURE IT WITH THIS. YOU KNOW, THE HEROIC ACTS OF THE POLICE OFFICERS WHO PUT THEMSELVES IN DANGER WHEN THEY ENTERED THAT KROGER STORE, CHECKING AISLE BY AISLE, VISITING RELATED ROOMS BARRICADED OR STORE EMPLOYEES INSIDE WHO DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. SO THIS EVOLVED INTO AN INCREDIBLY DRAMATIC, INCREDIBLY HORRIBLE SITUATION. WE KNOW TWO PEOPLE, TWO SUSPECTS, WHO HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR NOW, AND WE’RE REPORTING LIVE HERE IN COLERAIN TOWNSHIP TONIGHT. TODD — WLWT NEWS FIVE. TODD, THANKS. AND WE’RE WORKING TO GET CONDITIONS FOR THOSE SUSPECTS. NOTHING HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED TO US AS OF NOW. DAISY KERSHAW OF WLWT NEWS FIVE IS ALSO LIVE ON SITE RIGHT NOW AND OUR TEAM COVERAGE CONTINUES. DAISY, I KNOW YOU’VE TALKED TO A LOT OF PEOPLE. WHAT DO YOU KNOW? SO, MIKE SHEREE, THAT’S TRUE. LIKE YOU SAID, WE’RE STILL WORKING TO GET AN UPDATE ON THE CONDITION OF THE SUSPECT. LIKE TODD SAID. AS WE HAVE ALL SAID, THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY ACTIVE, CONSTANTLY EVOLVING SITUATION, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT EVERYONE I HAVE TALKED TO IN THIS STORE SAID THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SITUATION. AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE SAID IT HERE. IT IS INCREDIBLY CROWDED. PEOPLE’S CARS ARE STILL IN THE PARKING LOT. AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES, WE JUST HAVE MASSES OF PEOPLE POURING OUT OF THE STORE, WITH CHILDREN ON THEIR HANDS. YOU KNOW, SOME PEOPLE, ONE WE TALKED TO, COULDN’T GET OUT OF THE STORE BY HERSELF, SHE HAD TO BE CARRIED OUT BY ANOTHER CUSTOMER. THAT’S THE KIND OF HORRIBLE THING YOU NEVER WANT TO BE RELATED TO. WE’RE GOING TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE NOW WHO SAW ALL OF THIS. WE HEARD THE RAPID SUCCESS OF SHOTS. AND SO EVERYONE JUST STARTED RUNNING, AND I TRIED TO RUN AND FALL IN THE DOORWAY, AND SOMEONE HAD TO PULL ME OUT BECAUSE I COULDN’T KEEP RUNNING. SO ME AND SOME OTHER CUSTOMERS DUCKED BEHIND OUR CARS IN THE HANDICRAFT AREA. WE JUST COULDN’T BELIEVE IT. SITUATIONS LIKE THIS, YOU KNOW, I’VE HEARD FROM SO MANY PEOPLE HERE, THEY’VE HELPED EACH OTHER, ADVANCED EACH OTHER TO TAKE COVER. STORE EMPLOYEES HAVE HELPED PEOPLE WHO WERE JUST HERE TO SHOP AND MAYBE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THE STORE AND MADE SURE EVERYONE GOT TO SAFETY. IT’S THE HEROIC WE’RE SEEING AS TODD FROM THE POLICE HERE MENTIONED, OF OTHERS INVOLVED AND AN ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SITUATION. RECOVERED, BOTH SUSPECTS WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATE
