Teenager stabbed and killed in brawl in Herriman, police say

HERRIMAN — A 16-year-old boy is dead after being stabbed in the street Wednesday afternoon, Herriman police said.

Cody Stromberg, deputy chief of the Herriman Police Department, told KSL that the stabbing occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on Beckenbauer Avenue after an altercation broke out between two groups of people on the street.

“I just saw a lot of little kids running back and forth, crying and hugging each other,” said Irma Rios, a resident of the neighborhood. “I saw one, he was shirtless and he wanted to get to the car, but the police and paramedics wouldn’t let him go.”

Stromberg said the slain teen was stabbed in the chest and was found by emergency responders in a car. Paramedics administered first aid to the teen, but he succumbed to his injuries. Rios said she noticed some girls telling police they were trying to stop another vehicle from leaving the scene of the accident.

“All I hear is the girls saying it was a whole bunch and they’re trying to stop it because they know her,” she said.

As the investigation continued, Stromberg said police identified at least four suspects involved in the stabbing and located two of them at a Riverton home on Daggerwing Way.

Police said they found the car the two men used to flee the crime scene at the house in Riverton. The car belonged to one of the four suspects.

Stromberg said the South Valley SWAT team helped police approach the home because some of the people inside had prior histories. He said the other two suspects were driven to a local hospital by family members with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe the suspects and the victim were leaving the nearby Valley High School graduation ceremony when the two parties started a fight on Beckenbauer Drive.

Stromberg said four other people – two women, a man and an underage boy – were arrested and questioned by police. One of the people was at the Riverton home.

According to the police report, the slain teenager did not live in the area where he was stabbed, but did not say where he lived or why he was in the area.

Stromberg confirmed that investigators are treating this case as a homicide. He said the investigation could take several hours before more information is released.
