“I was embarrassed,” says Cyndi Lauper’s son’s accuser of sexual assault – “now or never”

A woman has accused Cyndi Lauper’s son Declyn Lauper of sexually harassing her, claiming she was too embarrassed to speak out beforehand

Declyn Lauper was accused of sexual assault

Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn Lauper, has been accused of sexual assault in a new lawsuit, and the victim claimed the statute of limitations prompted her to act.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told The Mirror: “I was definitely embarrassed. It took me a while to see myself as a victim because I’m normally a strong person, so I was embarrassed. I took the time limit on it into account and I think it was now or never time to speak up for myself.”

Legal documents obtained by the Mirror state that Lauper’s son allegedly “negligently, wantonly, recklessly, intentionally and knowingly attempted and attempted to sexually assault and abuse the plaintiff” in an alleged violation of New York City’s Gender-Based Violence Victims Protection Act.

The victim claimed the incident occurred on November 9, 2020, and that she had a limited amount of time under the law to tell her story. The original legislation had a statute of limitations of seven years, with rare exceptions extending the period to nine years. However, a recent amendment has created a window from March 1, 2023, to March 1, 2025, during which victims can come forward at any time, even if the statute of limitations has expired. Regardless, while the plaintiff still has time to come forward, it is certainly limited.

The plaintiff claimed in court documents that Declyn invited her to his apartment and then coerced her into performing sexual acts on him. She claimed he confiscated her cell phone and verbally abused her after the incident. Additionally, the victim claimed he apologized for what happened while she was waiting for her ride downstairs. She claimed he tried to contact her afterward, but she never saw him again.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff claims she suffered “emotional and psychological harm” that “cannot be overstated: it was profound and lasting.” In a statement to The Mirror, she said: “After the attack, I began to panic. I felt like my life was truly in danger at that point.”

Mark Shirian, the plaintiff’s attorney, told The Mirror: “With this lawsuit, we seek to hold Mr. Lauper accountable for the serious harm caused to our client. Our client has a right to have her voice heard and to receive the justice she deserves.”
