13-year-old boy dead after hit-and-run in southeast Edmonton: police

A 13-year-old boy was hit by a car while riding his bike in southeast Edmonton early Wednesday morning, police said.

In a press release, police said officers had identified the suspect vehicle but were still searching for it and the driver, who fled the scene of the accident.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, paramedics called Edmonton Police for assistance after finding a 13-year-old boy in medical distress at the corner of 48th Street and 34th Avenue near the Minchau neighbourhood.

He succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.

The boy was riding his bicycle when a vehicle hit him on the eastbound lane near the intersection and fled the scene, police said.

The vehicle is believed to be a blue Mazda 3 sedan or hatchback manufactured sometime between 2014 and 2018. Investigators say the vehicle has damage to the front of the driver’s side.

The investigation has now been taken over by the EPS Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

Police are asking anyone with information on the driver or suspect vehicle, or dashboard camera footage from the Mill Woods area that captured the collision or suspect, to contact police.
