Judge suspends deadline in confidential documents case

(The Center Square) – Judge Aileen Cannon suspended a key deadline in former President Donald Trump’s case over confidential documents amid defense allegations that prosecutors failed to preserve key evidence in the case.

Trump’s defense team had asked the judge last month to suspend the May 9 deadline for expert disclosure and disclosure under the Classified Information Procedures Act until three weeks after the conclusion of the New York hush money trial. This week, Cannon temporarily suspended the deadlines. The latest delay could make it more difficult to stand trial this year.

Trump’s lawyers also claimed that prosecutors “failed to protect the integrity of the contents of at least some of the boxes recovered from Mar-a-Lago.” The case against Trump depends on the documents in those boxes.

“It is likely that President Trump will make additional motions for expropriation sanctions, including a motion to dismiss the indictment, if the Office of Special Counsel cannot reliably demonstrate how it seized and handled key evidence in the case.” be a central issue in any trial,” the defense attorneys wrote in a response.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 40 felony counts alleging he kept sensitive military documents, gave them to people who didn’t have security clearance and tried to circumvent the government’s attempts to get them back.

Trump has repeatedly said that the civil and criminal charges he faces are the result of politically motivated prosecutions aimed at preventing him from returning to the White House.

Trump is preparing for a November rematch with President Joe Biden.
