Fuquay-Varina Police Chief retires, Deputy Police Chief appointed

FUQUAY-VARINA, NC – The City of Fuquay-Varina has announced that Captain Tim Smith has been named the city’s acting police chief, a position he previously held in 2022.

Smith succeeds Brandon Medina, who resigned as chief on Wednesday. Medina’s term as chief began in April 2022.

Smith has over 23 years of experience in the City of Fuquay-Varina. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ashworth College.

Captain Tim Smith has been appointed acting police chief for the City of Fuquay-Varina.

Smith holds intermediate and advanced certificates in law enforcement from the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Smith is a graduate of the State of North Carolina’s Law Enforcement Executive Program and the Administrative Officer’s Management Program. He completed the Local Government Federal Government Fellows Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Smith assumed the role Wednesday afternoon when Medina’s retirement took effect.
