Winslow Police are investigating the dog dragging incident

Winslow police announced Tuesday that they are investigating an allegation of animal abuse made against a local animal control officer.

WINSLOW, Ariz. — The Winslow Police Department said the agency is investigating the conduct of an animal control officer who was allegedly seen pulling a dog by the neck.

The incident occurred on May 4 when an animal control officer attempted to capture a loose dog in a neighborhood near Winslow High School.

A video purporting to capture the incident was recently posted to a local Facebook group.

The video shows a dog lying on the ground, panting and panting, being dragged along the sidewalk with a control rod.

Police said the animal control officer was placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation and that the captured dog appeared to be in “good health.”

Police asked for patience as they investigated the matter and indicated that the agency would publicly release its findings.

According to the 2020 Census, Maricopa County is the fourth most populous county in the United States with a population of 4,485,414.

The county contains approximately 63% of Arizona’s population and is 9,224 square miles in size. This makes the county larger than seven US states (Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire).

One of the largest park systems in the country is also located in Maricopa County. The county has an estimated 120,000 acres of open space parks, which include hundreds of miles of trails, nature centers and campgrounds.

The county seat is in Phoenix, which is also the state capital and the fifth largest city in the United States according to the census.

The county was named after the Maricopa or Piipaash Indian tribe.
