The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to an imprisoned rapist and ordered him to acknowledge his child and pay for its maintenance and education expenses.

A Natore Women and Children Repression (Prevention) Tribunal on August 9, 2016 sentenced rapist Sree Chandan Kumar of Bagatipara in Natore to life imprisonment and a fine of Taka 50,000 for raping a college student who later gave birth to a baby girl.

Chandan asked for bail and stated that he was the legal father of the now eight-year-old girl and would take care of all her maintenance until her wedding.

He said his daughter was now under the care of her mother.

The bench comprising SM Kuddus Zaman and AKM Rabiul Hassan granted Chandan six months bail and asked him to submit a report on payment of maintenance expenses to the court after six months.

If he fails to submit the compliance report, his bail would be revoked, the Supreme Court decision said.

However, the Supreme Court asked Chandan’s lawyer Muhibullah Tanvir to prepare his client’s appeal against the life sentence so that it could be ready for hearing in six months.

Chandan knocked on her door at midnight on June 17, 2010 and raped her, announcing that he would marry her the next day. However, he later refused to marry her.

The victim filed a complaint of rape against Chandan on August 23, 2010 after he refused to marry her. The investigating officer filed a chargesheet in this regard on September 23, 2010.

According to his lawyer Muhibullah Tanvir, Chandan has been in prison for almost eight years.

Deputy Attorney General Mirza Mohammed Soyeb Muhit opposed the rapist’s bail.
