Vermont murder suspect arrested in South Carolina, police say

A suspect in a fatal stabbing attack in Pownal has been arrested in South Carolina, police said. Vermont State Police said 18-year-old Elizah Coppedge of Chicopee, Mass., was arrested on May 19 as a fugitive from Vermont law enforcement. Coppedge is accused of first-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Casey Gras of Bennington. On the afternoon of Feb. 6, police said they received a report of an altercation on Chickadee Drive in Pownal. When they arrived at the scene, officers found Gras’ body. An autopsy revealed that Gras died from multiple stab wounds to the abdomen and chest. His death was ruled a homicide. Police believe Coppedge and Gras got into an argument over drugs. Jail records show Coppedge is being held at the Greenwood County Detention Center in Greenwood, South Carolina. He is expected to remain in prison in South Carolina until he can be extradited to Vermont to face murder charges.
