Brighton Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle has been expelled from the party

A Labour MP has been suspended from the party following a “serious complaint” and will not seek re-election.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown since 2017, said on social media he received a letter informing him of the suspension “out of the blue” and claimed the suspension related to a “harassing and politically motivated complaint about my conduct eight years ago”.

He said: “This is a false accusation that I strongly reject and I believe it is aimed at disrupting this election.”

“I don’t have enough time to defend myself because these processes within the party take too long. That’s why the party has informed me that I am no longer allowed to stand as a candidate in the next election.”

Russell-Moyle said he was “devastated” and said he would cooperate with the investigation to clear his name.

He said: “I wish Keir Starmer, Angela Ryaner and the Labour team the best of luck and hope that on election night we can celebrate Labour victories across Sussex and beyond.”

The local councillors are said to be “completely beside themselves” in light of this news.

One councillor told LabourList: “My enthusiasm for the election campaign has taken a significant hit – and I’m sure I speak for many.”

The Labour Party confirmed that Russell-Moyle had been “suspended from the party pending investigation following a serious complaint received last week”. A new candidate for the constituency is expected to be announced “in the coming days”.

A party spokesman said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints extremely seriously and investigates them fully in accordance with our rules and procedures and takes any necessary disciplinary action.”
