Probe still on Taware switching samples

On Monday, police had arrested two doctors from Sassoon – Dr Ajay Taware, former chief medical officer and current head of the forensic medicine department, and Dr Shrihari Halnor, a trauma doctor – and Atul Ghatkamble, a staff member of the hospital’s mortuary. They were accused of altering the sample taken from the minor in exchange for money. Investigations revealed that the sample had been disposed of in a dustbin of the hospital. After their arrest, police searched various premises of the accused and seized cash amounting to Rs 300,000 – Rs 250,000 from Dr Halnor and Rs 50,000 from Ghatkamble, which police said was their share in the crime.

Festive offer

“On Tuesday and Wednesday, the premises linked to Taware were further searched. We are working on the leads we received during these searches. He is not very forthcoming during his questioning and is hesitant on some important questions. We are still investigating the financial transactions, how much money he received or what was promised to him and by whom. Another important aspect is the blood sample with which they replaced the minor’s sample,” said an officer involved in the investigation. Police said on Tuesday that it was Taware’s idea to alter the sample to tamper with the blood alcohol concentration test and thwart the investigation.
