Malayalam film director Omar Lulu, celebrated for his romantic comedy Hello Love (2019) was accused of rape and is currently being investigated by the Kerala Police.

The proceedings were initiated after an actor filed a complaint, as reported PTI.

The director rose to worldwide fame when a song clip by Hello Love, Manikya Malaraya Pooviin which actress Priya Prakash Varrier winks went viral.

Director allegedly raped young actress after promising her a role

A young Malayalam actress has reportedly filed a sexual harassment complaint against Lulu, alleging that the director raped her multiple times after promising her a film role.

The Nedumbassery police recorded the statement of the victim.

In a statement, as reported Manorama OnlineLulu denied the allegations and replied, “I was friends with this girl for a long time. She acted in my last film… However, there was a rift and we have not been in touch for the last six months.”

The director denied the allegations and suspected ulterior motives

Responding to the allegations, Lulu told the publication: “Now, just when I started my new film, she has filed such a complaint.”

“The motive behind such an accusation could be her frustration at not being given a chance in the film,” Lulu claimed, adding, “But sometimes it could also be part of an attempt to extort money.”

Lulu was charged under Article 376 of the Penal Code (punishment for rape)

An officer of the Ernakulam Rural Police Station confirmed PTI that an investigation was initiated following the filing of an FIR against Lulu.

The original complaint was received by the Kochi City Police Commissioner, who filed an FIR and subsequently transferred the case to Nedumbassery police station, where the alleged crime had taken place.

Lulu was charged under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (punishment for rape).

When Lulu’s “Chunkzz” attracted attention by “sexualizing” women

For those who don’t know, Lulu made his debut in the Malayalam film industry with Happy wedding (2016) starring Siju Wilson and Drishya Raghunath. His later works, especially Chunkzz (2017) attracted considerable attention due to their excessive profanity and portrayal of women through “objectification” and “sexualization.”
