What was the cause of the accident on Route 15 in which several people were killed? That is what the Virginia State Police officers are trying to find out. The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. when the Virginia State Police (VSP), Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department, Toga Volunteer Fire Department and Buckingham County EMS were called to the intersection of Route 15 and Saw Mill Road.

Due to the two-vehicle accident, all lanes were closed at the time. One vehicle had overturned and debris covered the road. At the time of the emergency call, fire and rescue services were notified of several people with serious injuries, some of whom were still trapped in their vehicles. The Farmville Fire Department and Prince Edward Rescue were also requested to assist.

Unfortunately, all those involved died at the scene. The Virginia State Police confirmed four deaths to The Herald on Tuesday afternoon. In a statement, Buckingham Ambulance officials said all were dead when help arrived.

“Upon arrival of emergency personnel, it was determined that there were no surviving occupants in any of the vehicles,” Buckingham officials said in a statement.

The cleanup and investigation took several hours, with Route 15 closed at that intersection from 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. State police brought in the Appomattox Division Accident Reconstruction Team to help determine what happened. To be clear, the investigation by VSP personnel is still ongoing, and there is no time frame for when it will be completed. As asked Tuesday afternoon, officials from several departments are asking residents not to speculate on the cause of the accident. VSP officials said they would provide more details as soon as possible.
