Baby kidnapped in Laplace found safe and sound

LAPLACE – Police are still searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman and kidnapped her baby on Tuesday.

The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office said a woman told officers she was driving through Laplace around 3 a.m. on May 28 when she was sexually assaulted and dragged from her vehicle. She said her attacker fled in the car. Her 8-month-old son, Phil Baker, was in the car.

The baby was recovered by police in New Orleans around 8 p.m. and is in good health. It is unclear where the child was found.

St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre said the victim was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

“She’s in pretty bad shape,” the sheriff said.

Officers tracked down a suspect on Tuesday evening, but he had an alibi and was acquitted. Police are still looking for the people who had the child.
