More than 1,100 people were arrested for drunk driving in California over Memorial Day weekend

More than 1,100 people were arrested in California for driving under the influence over Memorial Day weekend, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Over the holiday weekend, the CHP conducted a “maximum enforcement period” that began at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, May 24 and lasted until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 27.

Authorities said there were 1,350 arrests, of which 1,106 were for drunk driving. That means an average of one drunk driving arrest every four minutes during the 78-hour monitoring period.

“Unfortunately, 42 people were killed in crashes on California’s roadways during the MEP,” CHP said in a press release. “Of the 17 vehicle occupants killed in crashes in CHP jurisdiction, eight were not wearing seat belts.”

During the same period, almost 32,000 traffic violations were issued, including:

• 19,000 speeding tickets issued
• 800 tickets issued to drivers driving faster than 100 miles per hour
• Around 1,850 tickets for violations of the seat belt requirement
• More than 2,000 tickets for distracted driving

According to the Highway Safety Administration, the days from Memorial Day to Labor Day are considered the “100 deadliest days” for teen drivers and passengers.

“While there is no maximum enforcement period in place, we should continue to work together to make responsible choices: drive sober, avoid distractions, obey speed limits and always wear your seat belt,” the press release said.
