The London Knights were involved in the first brawl of this Memorial Cup and have now been handed the first suspension.

Often-suspended winger Sawyer Boulton received a one-game seat suspension and the Knights were fined $1,000 for a warm-up rule violation before London’s 5-4 win over Moose Jaw on Monday at the Dow Event Center.

Boulton will begin serving his suspension on Wednesday in the highly anticipated game against the host Saginaw Spirit. The 6’1″, 215lb player sat out the final two games of the OHL Western Conference final against the Spirit with a foot injury and has already been suspended several times in his first major junior season.

He started 18 games earlier this season but was suspended for 15. He received a 10-game suspension after elbowing Soo Greyhounds captain Bryce McConnell-Barker in the head shortly after the London native scored a goal in a December game against the Knights.

“Everyone makes mistakes,” said Rob Simpson, the Knights’ assistant general manager, at the time.

The Knights were the most heavily penalized team in the Ontario Hockey League this season.

In 40 games during the regular season, Boulton had three goals, two assists and 63 penalty minutes. His younger brother, 17-year-old Ryder Boulton, posted similar numbers for the Knights this season.

Her father is former NHL player Eric Boulton, who played OHL hockey for a Sarnia Sting team coached by Mark Hunter, current London owner/general manager.
