Nebraska Attorney General’s Office warns consumers about fraudulent SunPass toll road text messages

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is issuing a consumer alert regarding a toll road-related text message scam circulating in Nebraska.

Nebraska residents are receiving text messages asking them to pay an outstanding balance on a SunPass toll road to avoid a $50 fine. The text message includes a link to make the payment. Not click on the link.

Please note that the Nebraska Department of Transportation confirms that there are no toll roads in Nebraska. There is only one toll bridge in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Nebraska residents may have traveled for work or vacation to other states that have toll roads. However, be aware of a INCORRECT text message.

How to protect yourself:

  • Do not click on links in unwanted messages or download files.
  • Verify the source by contacting the organization directly using the information provided on their website.
  • Do not provide any personal or financial information in response to unsolicited messages, emails or phone calls.
  • Block the number that sent the text and delete the message.
  • If you have clicked on a link or provided personal information, be sure to dispute any unknown charges and work to secure your bank accounts.

This technique is called “smishing” and is a combination of “SMS” (“Short Message Service” or what is commonly known as text) and the scam technique known as “phishing.” Smishing attempts to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cybercriminals.
