There have been nine police-involved shootings in Phoenix this year. Here are the data.

12News takes a closer look at the available data on police shootings and assaults.

PHOENIX – There will be nine police-involved shootings in Phoenix in 2024, Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.

In eight of these shootings, police officers were shot at. In three of these shootings, a police officer was struck by gunfire.

The latest incident occurred early Tuesday morning near the corner of 10th Street and Southern, where a suspect pulled out a gun during a struggle with officers and shot one of them. The other officer returned fire, killing the suspect, police said.

“It’s indicative of the violence that police officers face on the streets every day,” Sullivan said Tuesday morning.

According to Phoenix police, the number of officer-involved shootings is generally declining, although it has remained roughly the same over the past two years.

The highest number of police shootings ever occurred in 2018, with 44 shootings.

There were ups and downs in the years that followed, but this level was never reached again.

The FBI keeps records of police officers who have been killed or attacked in the line of duty.

The data is not broken down by department, but over the past decade, the number of officers injured in the line of duty has generally increased.

Finally, the FBI also stores data on violent crimes nationwide (although individual departments submit this data voluntarily and not all do so).

According to FBI data, Arizona’s violent crime rate is consistently above the national average. For comparison, California and New Mexico are also higher, with New Mexico having a much higher violent crime rate.
