Rescue operations in Schuylkill County are suspended

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pennsylvania – A water rescue operation has been canceled in Schuylkill County.

On Tuesday around 2:15 p.m., dive teams were called to a former coal mining area in a wooded area just off East Main Street in Butler Township near Girardville, which is now used as a local swimming area.

According to officials, a kayaker capsized in the water and was unable to resurface.

A section of East Main Street was closed while emergency crews arrived.

Rescue workers called off the rescue mission around 6 p.m. because strong storms were sweeping through the area.

There is no information yet on when the search for the kayaker will resume.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
