Family holds peace march, demands justice for Atlanta teen killed a year ago

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Tuesday marked the first anniversary of 16-year-old Bre’Asia Powell, who was shot and killed during a graduation ceremony in southwest Atlanta.

Powell’s mother, Necole Williams, organized a peace march and rally near Benjamin E. Mays High School, where the shooting took place. Williams said she wants to see an end to gun violence and continues to fight for justice in her daughter’s case.

“I’m trying to grieve and fight for justice. Oh Lord, I don’t know if I’m coming or going. It’s just a journey,” Williams said. “I just want justice. This will never end. I just want justice. Just tell me what happened and get people involved.

Williams remembers her daughter as a superstar, who was a joy to be around and hard-working.

“I miss everything, I mean everything,” she said. “His presence, his smile, his laugh.”

Powell was an innocent victim in the shooting.

Williams told Atlanta News that police initially provided him with very few updates on the case. Three people have already been charged in connection with Powell’s death. But last summer, Atlanta police said they were looking for other suspects. Since then, there have been no more arrests, something Williams hopes will change.

“They were just outside and having fun, and then someone started shooting,” she said.
