Brandon McManus, placekicker for the Jacksonville Jaguars

  • Former Jaguars kicker Brandon McManus has been accused of sexual assault by two women

  • The incident reportedly occurred when the women were working as flight attendants during a team charter flight in September 2023

  • The women are also suing the Jaguars for “lack of supervision” of McManus and “failure to create a safe environment.”

Two women have filed a lawsuit against the Jacksonville Jaguars and former kicker Brandon McManus over an alleged incident that occurred on a team flight to London in September 2023, ESPN reported.

Court documents obtained by the news outlet show that the two women, identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe I and Jane Doe II, filed the suit in civil court in Duval County Circuit Court on May 24. In it, they accuse McManus, 32, of “rubbing” and “grinding” against the women during the flight.

The lawsuit accuses the Jaguars of “failing to supervise” the kicker and “failing to create a safe environment for the team’s personnel,” the media outlet says.

The women are demanding more than a million dollars and a jury trial.

According to ESPN, the women were employed as charter flight attendants for Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings at the time of the incident. The women claim the team flight “quickly turned into a party” and that McManus and several other players allegedly disregarded the flight attendants’ privacy, as well as aviation safety and federal laws, during the flight.

The lawsuit alleges that McManus, who will play for the Washington Commanders next season, tried to get three other flight attendants to drink alcohol and dance inappropriately for him by handing out $100 bills, ESPN reported.

Jane Doe I claims, according to ESPN, that McManus tried to kiss her while she was sitting on the plane during turbulence and later made two attempts to “rub himself” against her while she was serving in-flight meals.

Jane Doe II claims she confronted the NFL kicker after he touched her inappropriately, and she claims McManus “grinned and walked away.”

In a statement to ESPN on May 27, McManus’ attorney Brett R. Gallaway said the allegations were “completely fabricated” and part of an “extortion attempt” against his client. “These are completely fabricated and demonstrably false allegations made as part of a campaign to defame and disparage a talented and respected NFL player,” the statement said.

Gallaway added: “We intend to vigorously defend Brandon’s rights and integrity and clear his name by showing what these allegations really are – an extortion attempt,” ESPN said.

On May 28, Tony Buzbee, the women’s attorney, posted a statement on social media claiming he had attempted to settle the matter out of court with McManus’ legal team before filing the lawsuit on Friday.

“For anyone who has been asking, Buzbee Law Firm is the lead attorney for the two women who brought this case to trial. We filed the case on Friday, but prior to that we attempted to resolve this matter without trial without success,” Buzbee wrote.

The lawyer claimed that his team’s efforts to find a solution were “met with arrogance, ignorance and stupidity.”

Buzbee’s statement continued: “The allegations made in this lawsuit are very serious. We thoroughly reviewed them and spoke to witnesses before even accepting the cases. We will pursue this case with the same tenacity we are known for. It is a shame that this type of behavior still occurs. It happens far too often. These women were simply trying to do their jobs!”

On May 27, the Jaguars organization said in a statement to ESPN that it was aware of the allegations. “We are aware of the complaint and recognize the significance of the allegations. As we continue to investigate the matter, it must be emphasized that we insist on an organization built by people who represent our community and our game with the highest character and class,” the statement said.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Jaguars for further comment.

McManus was not re-signed by the Jaguars for the upcoming NFL season. On March 14, the kicker signed a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders, who were also informed of the allegations against McManus, according to ESPN.

“Today we were informed of the civil lawsuit filed against Brandon McManus on May 24. We take allegations of this nature very seriously and are investigating the matter,” the Commanders said in a statement to ESPN. “We have communicated with the league office and Brandon’s representative and will refrain from commenting further at this time.”
