Woodstock man charged with drunk driving, hitting pedestrian, killing dog – Shaw Local

A Woodstock man is accused of driving while intoxicated and hitting a pedestrian on the road on Monday, seriously injuring the man and killing his dog.

Christian J. Peetz Jr., 77, of the 600 block of Pleasant Street, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, a Class 4 felony, according to a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Court.

If convicted of a Class 4 felony, the sentence is one to three years in prison, with probation also possible.

Woodstock police said that at 2:10 p.m., Peetz “operated a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and struck a pedestrian on the roadway, resulting in multiple skull fractures and severe brain hemorrhage,” the complaint states.

The man was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to a news release from the Woodstock Fire Rescue District on Monday.

Firefighters and police arrived at the intersection of North Jefferson and East Judd Street around 2:15 p.m. and found “a single vehicle accident involving a pedestrian and a dog,” the news release said.

Paramedics examined the man, who was lying on the ground with “serious injuries.” The driver of the car refused medical help, the press release states.

The dog was pronounced dead at the scene. The Union Pacific railroad line runs through the crossing, and train service was suspended following the accident.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, Woodstock police declined to release further details on Tuesday.

Although prosecutors had requested that Peetz be held in county jail pending trial, he was released on conditions Tuesday following a hearing.

While on release, he is prohibited from consuming alcohol or illegal drugs, must submit to random drug and alcohol testing, must not drive a motor vehicle and must undergo a substance abuse evaluation within 45 days of his release and comply with all recommendations, according to the order signed by Judge Christopher Harmon.

His next court date is June 21. He did not name a lawyer on Tuesday.
