Texan killed in accident in Ruston on I-20

RUSTON, Louisiana (KNOE) – A Texas man died in a one-car crash on I-20 east of Louisiana Highway 563 in Ruston on Tuesday, May 28.

According to Louisiana State Police, 32-year-old Yashwanth Popuri was driving west on I-20 when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree.

According to LSP, Popuri died at the scene of the accident. The passenger suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital for further treatment.

Toxicological samples were routinely taken and sent for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.

“Police officers must remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle,” said a press release from LSP. “Never drive while impaired, tired or distracted. Obey all traffic laws and always make sure all passengers are properly restrained. While not all accidents can be survived, simple precautions like these can often make the difference between life and death.”

So far in 2024, LSP Troop F has investigated 19 fatal accidents with 20 fatalities.
