Victim of hit-and-run accident speaks out and asks community for answers

JACKSON, Tenn. – A local resident shares how a car accident last year dramatically changed her life.

Elizabeth Mason started her dream job a month before her hit-and-run accident.

She was on her way home from work at Jackson General Hospital when she was struck by a vehicle.

“I was driving down East Forest Avenue when a tan Jeep Cherokee ran a stop sign, they were coming off Martin Street,” Mason said.

The impact of the other car left her with a head injury that is now causing her to have seizures. She now also wears a heart monitor and is also confined to a wheelchair.

“I have fractures in my face, I have a metal rod in my leg, now in my femur, and the accelerator actually almost took my foot off,” Mason said.

Mason shared that she remembers thinking the other driver had left her to die.

She was informed that the other driver was allegedly driving under the influence.

“I contacted Madison County Police, who are very familiar with the owner of the vehicle as there were other vehicles registered there,” Mason said.

This moment was triggering for her because she once cared for patients the way she does now.

“I have seen what the patients have been through, now I am on the other side. I went from helping patients and caring for patients at Jackson General Hospital to becoming a victim,” Mason said.

Because of Mason’s condition, she believes she is not a good enough mother.

“It was emotional for me because I can’t take care of him. I have an autistic son that I can take care of. You know, like I should. Because now that I’m in a wheelchair, I can’t even prepare food for myself – it’s hard, it’s very hard for me,” Mason said.
