Former senior NHS surgeon charged with sexual abuse of hospital staff

A former senior cardiac surgeon for the British National Health Service (NHS) has been accused of sexually harassing six employees at a hospital in Blackpool.

Amal Bose, 54, was head of the cardiac and vascular surgery department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital until his medical licence was revoked last year pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Lancashire Police confirmed on Tuesday that Mr Bose had been arrested and charged on May 24 with 14 counts of sexual assault against six women.

Police were first made aware of the allegations in March 2023 after being “contacted by the hospital, who reported to us a number of allegations of sexual assault against staff at the trust”.

She confirmed that she had brought charges against Mr Bose, of Thurnham, Lancaster, as part of her investigation and that some of the allegations were against the same women.

“Following an investigation and consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, we have now laid charges against a man,” said a Lancashire Police spokesman.

“The alleged offences occurred between 2017 and 2022. Some of the charges cover more than one incident. The alleged victims were all staff members of Blackpool Victoria Hospital.”

The former cardiothoracic specialist was first arrested on March 21 last year. The General Medical Council imposed conditions on his licence and referred his case to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

In April 2012 he joined Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and worked there for around 12 years.

Mr Bose also practised at the Lancashire Cardiac Centre and was Honorary Treasurer of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland until last year.

According to his social media profile on LinkedIn, he is currently “occupationally disabled.”

Mr Bose was released on bail and will appear before Lancaster Magistrates Court on June 7.
