Riverside bike thief arrested in Berwyn

On May 20, a man was arrested in Berwyn after stealing a bicycle from an unlocked garage in Riverside.

Two officers were dispatched to the intersection of Southcote Road and Selborne Road at around 7:40 p.m. that evening after receiving reports of a man attempting to enter back yards. According to police, a witness told one of the officers at the scene that he saw the man in question enter a garage on Selborne Road on foot and ride away from the house on a bicycle. The witness gave police a description of the man. Someone at the corner of 26th Street and Harlem Avenue told police they saw a man matching that description walking east.

Police later found the man at the corner of Cermak Road and Ridgeland Avenue in Berwyn. An officer brought in the witness who saw the man enter a garage, who confirmed it was the same man. The man was arrested and taken to the police station.

Police contacted the owner of the bike, valued at about $480, and asked him to sign a report. The owner said he left the bike in his unlocked garage and provided police with door camera footage showing the man searching the owner’s home before stealing the bike.

The man was read his Miranda warning at about 8:50 p.m. and placed in a cell for refusing to answer questions. Charges of aggravated assault were filed at about 2:45 a.m. the next morning. The man was later arraigned and released. A court date was set for May 28.

Arrested for driving with a revoked license and arrest warrant

On May 18, a woman was arrested in Riverside after a police officer saw her driving without a seatbelt.

According to police, a patrol officer near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Harlem Avenue saw the woman not wearing a seatbelt. He maneuvered behind the woman’s car and pulled her into a parking space next to the 7-Eleven at the intersection. When the officer asked her for her driver’s license and proof of insurance, the woman said she did not have either. The officer checked her name and date of birth in the police database, which revealed that she had a DeKalb County warrant for her arrest and her driver’s license was suspended.

The officer arrested the woman that evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. Her car stopped because it was properly parked and the woman was taken to the police station where she received her citations and paperwork. A court date for the driving without a license charge was set for July 5. The woman was released because her DeKalb County warrant stated that she would not be detained and a court date was set for June 6.

Woman injured during nighttime walk

On May 20, around 10:10 p.m., police were called to a home in the 8800 block of Burlington Avenue for a report of assault, but no one was arrested.

According to police, a man had called to report that his girlfriend had been attacked while walking home alone from the Irish Times. After arriving at the residence, an officer spoke with the woman, who said she had several drinks with a friend at the Irish Times before walking home alone. She said she was walking east on Burlington Avenue past the Irish Times parking lot when an unknown man pushed her to the ground, injuring her right knee and left knuckles. The woman said she struck out at the man while she was on the ground, causing him to flee. She was able to describe the man to police, but not what he was wearing.

Paramedics arrived on scene to examine the woman, who signed a statement refusing medical attention.

Police noted in their report that the woman said she had consumed seven alcoholic drinks that evening and that she spoke slurred while speaking to officers. They also noted that she “changed her account of the incident” at some points.

Another officer reported that the woman told him that she and her friend had a drink not at the Irish Times, but at Phil’s Sports Bar & Grill.

The woman told police she was just documenting the incident and did not want to sign a report. Police told her they would review the Irish Times’ CCTV footage and get back to her later.

In a supplemental police report the next morning, police said an officer reviewed surveillance footage. In it, the officer saw the woman leave Phil’s and walk east, past Irish Times. In the footage, the woman struggled with her balance. As she passed Irish Times, the woman entered a blind spot for about nine seconds before reappearing in front of 8859 Burlington Avenue and crossing the street. In the footage, the woman continued walking east until she reached the Brookfield train station bike rack near Forest Avenue. As she continued walking east, about 20 yards from her home, she was no longer seen due to lighting. Police noted that no one was seen approaching the woman or moving away from the area where she was seen in the footage.
