Buffalo firefighters investigate possible gas leak on Franklin Street

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo Fire Department is investigating a possible gas leak at a building on Franklin Street in downtown Buffalo Tuesday morning.

The area on Franklin, between Huron and Mohawk streets, was closed. Everyone within a 300-foot radius of the building was evacuated. About 1,000 people were displaced, according to Buffalo Fire.

Firefighters entered the eight-story building, where they found “very high” levels of natural gas. The building houses Osteria 166 and other businesses. The gas to the building has been shut off and they are working to resolve the situation.

Additionally, students from the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School are not permitted to travel to the area. Classes for the day have been canceled.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
