The Detroit Lions are bringing back a familiar face.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that the Lions were re-signing safety CJ Moore to a one-year deal. Moore was recently reinstated after serving a one-year suspension.

Moore was one of several Lions players suspended in 2023 for violating NFL gambling rules. He and wide receiver Quintez Cephus were suspended for the entire season. Both players were recently reinstated and Cephus has since signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Moore initially came to the Lions in 2019 as an undrafted free agent from Ole Miss. He ended up playing a big role for the team, especially on special teams. This role became his calling card, as he was a central player in the team’s coverage and return units.

Before his suspension last year, Moore had signed a one-year deal to remain a Lion through the 2023 season. However, he was released after the suspension.

The Lions are currently at the safe position in depth. Kerby Joseph is out until training camp after hip surgery, while Ifeatu Melifonwu starts the season as a starter for the first time. The Syracuse product experienced a breakout late in the year after acquiring Tracy Walker.

Before signing Moore, the only other true safety on the Lions’ roster was 2023 undrafted free agent Brandon Joseph.

Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated during league meetings that the organization could move Brian Branch from the nickel cornerback position to the safety position next season.

Moore will likely compete for a roster spot during training camp and have the opportunity to give the team depth on defense and special teams. He has 48 career tackles and one interception in four NFL seasons.
