Accident in Pune: How a teenager’s blood sample was “altered” and no longer contained traces of alcohol

The case of the Pune teenager who speeded in a Porsche and killed two software engineers has taken a new twist since two doctors and an employee of Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital were arrested in connection with the alleged tampering with the teenage driver’s blood sample.

Sources have now reported News18 the process that led to the manipulation of the blood sample.

Pune police arrested Dr Ajay Taware, head of the forensic medicine department of Sassoon Hospital, Dr Shrihari Halnor, chief medical officer, and associate Atul Ghatkamble, who works under Dr Taware. They were remanded in police custody till May 30.

How were blood samples altered?

• A blood sample of the minor accused was taken to Sassoon General Hospital at 11am on May 19.

• The accused’s father contacted Dr. Ajay Taware.

• On the request of Ajay Taware, D Srihari Halnore changed the samples. The blood sample of the second person was sent to the forensic laboratory.

• Sassoon’s doctor reported that the minor defendant had not consumed any alcohol.

• Police took another blood sample from the juvenile defendant for DNA testing at another government hospital.

• The blood sample taken for the second time matched the blood sample of the minor defendant and the father.

• However, Sassoon’s blood sample did not match the defendant’s blood sample.

• During police questioning, the doctor admitted to having altered the blood sample.
