Actress Jayati Bhatia played the character Phatto in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaarrecalled the infamous incident where her co-star Richa Chadha burst into tears on the set because director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was unhappy with her performance. Speaking to Bollywood Now, Jayati was asked about her interaction with Richa, who played the tragic character Lajjo in the show. She said, “I met Richa only a couple of times on the sets, for the song ‘Sakal Ban’ and then for her death scene. I was told that she would be in only two episodes, but I had no idea about her character. We talked about Lajjo in the scenes, but we didn’t know how fragile she was.”

Jayati continued, “I had heard about the famous 99 takes and the only reason I had heard about the incident was because my shoot was cancelled the next day. I asked the reason and was told, ‘Something bad happened yesterday. Sir did 101 takes with Richa and he didn’t want to stop.’ Woh ro rahi thi, badi pareshan thi, yeh thi, woh thi (She was very upset, she was crying).’ I said, ’99 takes? Why? How?’ I heard all that.”

Jayati said she first saw Richa’s performance at the premiere, which aired the first two episodes of the eight-part series. She said she couldn’t get up from her seat after the screening because she was so moved by Richa’s performance. “She’s only in two episodes, but when she dies, you feel a deep loss,” she said.

Festive offer

In a recent interview with India Today, Bhansali addressed reports of his bad behaviour on setand looked back on his experiences with Richa, especially during the shooting of the song “Masoom Dil Hai Mera”. He said, “That was a special moment. But nothing is worse (Her performance was not convincing). She tried, but I didn’t get what I wanted,” he said. “At a certain point, I got a little annoyed. I said, ‘You’ve rehearsed it, but it still doesn’t fit, you can’t get the mood right.’ I got a little angry and she got annoyed too… If you do too many takes and I scold you, then you’ll feel the humiliation that the character was supposed to show. When I watched it, I thought, ‘She’s actually crying.’ She held on to every beat. Until the last moment, she didn’t let go of that anger and frustration.”
