Israel confirms “shooting” at Egyptian border

JERUSALEM, May 27 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed a “shooting incident” “at the Egyptian border” after Israeli media reported an exchange of fire between Israeli and Egyptian soldiers at the Rafah border crossing on Monday.

“A few hours ago, a shooting incident occurred at the Egyptian border. The incident is currently under investigation and talks are taking place with the Egyptian side,” the IDF said.

Israel’s Jerusalem Post reported that an Egyptian soldier was killed in the exchange of fire, while Israel’s Channel 14 reported that there were no casualties.

The Israeli daily Maariv quoted sources within the Israeli armed forces as saying that Egyptian soldiers first fired at Israeli soldiers, who returned fire.

However, Al Araby, a Qatar-based news channel, quoted an Egyptian source as saying that Israeli forces had started the fighting.

Israeli Channel 13 reported on Monday that an “unusual incident” had occurred between Israeli and Egyptian soldiers at the Rafah border crossing.
