CHICAGO (WLS) — A reward of $5,000 has now been offered to help catch the people who attacked and injured a military veteran in the South Loop.

Kevin Qin said he was repeatedly kicked and punched by a group of at least eight people in the lobby of the South Loop jewelry store.

Qin and a group of leaders in the Asian American community are calling on Chicago police to investigate the alleged attack as a hate crime.

“I just think there has to be a big racist component because of what happened and what was said,” Qin said.

Qin, a former Marine who served in Iraq, was hospitalized for numerous injuries.

A Jewel-Osco spokesman said the store provided surveillance videos to police.
