Storm Debris Removal Continues for City of Houston Residents

HOUSTON — The City of Houston continued its storm debris collection efforts over the Memorial Day holiday as the aftermath of severe storms was evident throughout the city.

In northwest Houston, resident Bob Schamus told KHOU 11 News he was still piling up twisted tree branches and a section of a fallen utility pole Monday morning. He was surprised when a collection team came to take everything away.

“I have two 7-foot piles right behind me and then a smaller pile too, so a lot of debris,” he said. “I know it’s a huge cleanup job, so I’m just happy to see them come through and recover.” cleared of street stuff.

The city has already brought in 50 storm debris removal companies to help with the cleanup. In one neighborhood, KHOU 11 spotted a contractor’s truck Monday heading toward a suspended fiber optic line.

While nearby residents lost cable service, Lori Heuring said she was just relieved that power was still available after losing it for five days following the storm.

“It’s part of the process of getting back to normal,” she said. “This (cable outage) is something you can live with a little bit, but without our air conditioning, it’s terrible in Houston right now, so it would be bad.”

In addition to the trash collection trucks, Houston’s six neighborhood depots were open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sites are generally open for deposits Tuesday through Sunday. To access each site, residents must provide proof of residency including a photo ID and utility bill or rental agreement.
