Oxnard police open fire on murder suspect walking on street with ‘sharp object,’ investigators say

OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) – Investigators said police officers in Oxnard opened fire on a man wanted for attempted murder after he was walking on the street with a sharp object.

It happened just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of North Ventura Road.

Officers responded to the area after receiving multiple calls about a man “walking the streets with a sharp object in his hand” near Ventura Road and Doris Avenue. They quickly learned the suspect had an outstanding warrant for attempted murder in connection with a stabbing incident, police said.

“Officers made contact with the offender, who was holding a sharp object,” Oxnard police said in a press release. “Officers gave the offender instructions, but he did not follow them.”

Shortly thereafter, shots were fired, injuring the suspect. He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he is currently in stable condition.

No officers were injured.

Police said the officers’ body-worn cameras recorded the entire incident and the video would be made available to the public at a later date.

“In accordance with standard protocol for police-involved shootings, the officers involved have been placed on leave pending the investigation,” police said.

The Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident along with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information is asked to contact Detective Adam Aguilar at 805-385-7680 or [email protected].
