Accident causes traffic jam on I-81 southbound to Syracuse

An accident north of Exit 25A (Thruway) on southbound Interstate 81 resulted in the closure of several lanes on Monday, May 27, 2024.

Salina, NY – Traffic is backed up on Interstate 81 southbound to Syracuse on Monday following an accident.

According to state police spokeswoman Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a car struck a person in Salina, north of Exit 25A (the highway), around 10:50 a.m. The person was in the roadway trying to recover a canoe that had flown away from their vehicle, she said.

The person was taken to Upstate University Hospital, Jiron said, and is expected to survive.

After the accident, several lanes were closed. The highway is blocked from exit 27 (Syracuse Airport) to exit 25A.
