14-year-old girl killed in suspected drunk driving accident in Orange County – identity confirmed

The name of a 14-year-old girl who died in a traffic crash involving a drunken driving suspect on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach over the weekend was released by authorities Monday.

Rosenda Elizabeth Smiley was struck by a car Saturday night in the area of ​​Balboa Boulevard and Palm Street, about a block from the Balboa Fun Zone in Orange County.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene, but Smiley, a Rialto resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Joseph Alcazar, 30, of Fontana, was arrested after the accident.

He was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and child abuse.

Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the accident, but did not provide further details.
