Former coach Ray Davis on what he’ll bring to Buffalo: “Bills Mafia man, you’re going to have a great one.”

Kentucky running backs coach Jay Boulware sees Davis transferring his big-play ability from the Bluegrass State to Western New York.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — After striking fear into SEC defenses, Ray Davis can now wreak havoc against AFC defenses.

“We just talked about this businessman,” said Jay Boulware, Davis’ running backs coach at Kentucky. “He pushes me, I push him.”

Boulware coached the Bills’ fourth-round pick in his lone season at Kentucky. After rushing for 1,000 yards at Temple and Vanderbilt, Davis had his best collegiate season as a Wildcat.

He rushed for over 1,100 yards and set the school record with 21 total touchdowns, earning first-team All-SEC honors.

“He really worked hard to cut back,” Boulware said. “He’s improved his explosive runs. He’s had fewer carries and more yards here at Kentucky, so I think that says a lot about the guy and how hard he works,” Boulware said.

Davis excelled in showing he was a versatile back.

“He’s had a lot of touchdowns this year, which is what you want. You want a running back who can play on all three downs and that’s what Ray brings to the table,” Boulware said.

His talent for big plays is something Boulware can see Davis bringing to Buffalo.

“His biggest asset is the ability to make you miss on the field,” Boulware said. able to do it and able to finish. He had enough speed to finish those races.

In addition to the talent he brings to the field, Davis brings a story that the Bills Mafia can root for, overcoming homelessness growing up in San Francisco, to now being in the NFL.

“Every player wants to one day hear their name called and be drafted into the NFL, but to realize that coming from where they came from, man, I can only imagine what that’s like,” Boulware said.

And Boulware has a message for Bills fans ready to see Davis suit up in Buffalo.

“Bills Mafia man, you’re going to have a great one. A guy committed to the game, who constantly works hard to get a winning edge every day in everything he does.
