bne IntelliNews – Israel reports “shooting” at Egyptian border, one day after rocket attack on Rafah

Israel said there was a shooting incident on the border with Egypt on May 27 and was in contact with Cairo to resolve the matter, local television station Channel 12 reported.

In a brief statement, the Israeli military confirmed that a “shooting incident at the Egyptian border” had occurred earlier in the day, but did not provide further details.

“The incident is being investigated and a dialogue is taking place with the Egyptian side,” it said.

According to Israeli media reports, two Egyptian soldiers were killed and others injured in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops at the Rafah border crossing between the Egyptian Sinai Desert and the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

There were no reports of Israeli casualties.

The shooting incident came less than a day after Israel attacked a refugee camp in the Rafah neighborhood of Tal as-Sultan, killing more than 35 people, including children.

The Israeli military prosecutor subsequently described the events as “difficult” and added that Israel is investigating the incident.

Israel has faced a broad international reaction to the Israeli airstrike. French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “outraged by the Israeli attacks that have killed many displaced people in Rafah.” Norwegian Refugee Council director Jan Engeland condemned the Israeli government for crossing red lines.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman told X that the Israeli attack requires a “strong condemnation and a practical response” from the international community.

“This barbaric crime is a clear example of a war crime and a blatant violation of the International Court of Justice’s interim measures,” the ministry quoted Nasser Kanaani as saying.

“Whenever the child-murdering Zionist regime suffers humiliating defeats on the battlefield, it commits such insane war crimes against Palestinian civilians,” he added.

Israel and Egypt have close security relations, and on the basis of a 1979 peace treaty, both countries work closely together in the demilitarized Sinai region.
