ACPD: Man arrested after seriously injuring police officer on Columbia Pike

A Maryland man has been accused of seriously injuring a police officer in Arlington.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Pike and S. Walter Reed Drive.

“On May 26 at approximately 12:52 a.m., an officer enforcing parking regulations in the area observed the male suspect causing a disturbance outside a business in the 2900 block of Columbia Pike by attempting to confront security personnel,” Arlington County police said in a news release. “The officer approached and issued commands to the suspect, who refused, and subsequently pushed the officer into a parked, unoccupied vehicle, causing property damage.”

“The suspect then assaulted the officer, striking him multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot with a woman,” the press release continued. “A wanted alert was sent out for the suspect and officers responding to the call located and arrested him at the corner of Columbia Pike and S. Glebe Road.”

The Arlington County Police Department announces the arrest of a suspect after he intentionally injured an officer on duty. Otis Brown, 29, of Waldorf, MD, is charged with assault on police, aggravated assault and criminal damage to property. He is being held without bail in the Arlington County Detention Center.

On May 26 at approximately 12:52 a.m., an officer enforcing parking regulations in the area observed the male suspect causing a disturbance outside a business in the 2900 block of Columbia Pike by attempting to confront security personnel. The officer approached and issued commands to the suspect, who refused, and subsequently pushed him into a parked, unoccupied vehicle, causing property damage. The suspect then assaulted the officer by striking him several times before fleeing the scene on foot with a female. A wanted signal was sent for the suspect and responding officers located him and took him into custody at the corner of Columbia Pike and S. Glebe Road.

The officer suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries, was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition. The suspect was medically evaluated at an area hospital before being transported for admission.

Arlington County Police would like to thank bystanders who assisted the officer after the attack and provided a description of the suspect so he could be quickly identified and arrested.
