Police: Suspects break the window of a VCU police car and throw lit flares into it during the march

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Investigators are searching for multiple suspects accused of breaking the window of a Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) police car and throwing a lit flare into it Wednesday evening.

According to VCU Police, the incident occurred on May 1 at approximately 8:30 p.m. behind the VCU Police Headquarters at 224 East Broad Street in Richmond. At this point, a group of protesters were marching through the area and walking down East Marshall Street.

Two people who VCU police believe were involved in the demonstration reportedly separated from the group after it passed the headquarters and then made their way to the parking lot.

VCU police said the first suspect — seen wearing a dark plaid shirt, black hat, brown pants and boots — picked up a brick and threw it toward a VCU police car, shattering its rear window.

The second suspect, who was carrying a black backpack and wearing a light-colored shirt, blue hat and brown pants, then threw a lit torch through the broken window into the van, according to police.

The two then reportedly left the parking lot and continued down 3rd Street, where the march was headed.

The two suspects are wanted by VCU police for criminal damage and attempted arson.

8News reached out to VCU Police to confirm the nature of Wednesday night’s march and whether the suspects are believed to be connected to the protesters. At the time of reporting, VCU police have not responded to this request.
