Pedestrian killed in suspected DUI accident

FREMONT – A pedestrian was killed last week in a crash believed to have been caused by driving under the influence, police said Tuesday.

The collision occurred in the 45000 block of Fremont Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. Friday. According to police, the vehicle involved later crashed into a traffic pole about a quarter mile away, injuring its driver.

In a statement, Fremont police said they arrested a 58-year-old Sunnyvale man on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage resulting in injury.

When police and emergency services arrived, the pedestrian suffered serious injuries. According to police, rescuers attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation and an automated external defibrillator, but the victim died at the scene.

Authorities have not identified the victim until family members have been notified.

The accident was the first fatal accident that Fremont police have investigated this year.

The suspect went to a hospital and suffered minor injuries, according to police. He remained in custody at the Alameda County Jail Tuesday afternoon on $150,000 bail.
