Investigation into allegations against shock rocker Marilyn Manson concluded after 19 months

After months of investigation, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office must now decide whether or not to file charges against shock rocker Marilyn Manson.

The 53-year-old “Antichrist Superstar” singer, whose real name is Brian Warner, was the subject of a wave of sexual abuse allegations that allegedly took place between 2009 and 2011 and sparked an investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The department has now completed its 19-month investigation into Warner and has forwarded at least some of its findings to the district attorney’s office, Los Angeles’ KCBS-TV reports.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón will ultimately decide whether or not his office will file charges against the singer.

Gascón gave an update on the investigation on Instagram on Tuesday.

“On September 19, 2022, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators submitted partial case materials to LADA regarding the sexual assault allegations against Brian Warner, also known as Marilyn Manson,” Gascón said. “There is additional material pending, however, we do not have a timeline for additional submission by LASD.”

Officials did not say what material they were waiting for, but sheriff’s officials confirmed to several news outlets that their investigation was complete.

“Once we receive everything, experienced prosecutors will carefully and diligently review everything that has been filed before making a decision to file,” Gascón continued. “This review will take some time, but rest assured, our office takes these allegations very seriously.”

The statement comes just a week after Gascón was asked for an update on the case as part of his #AsktheDA series on Instagram, according to FOX affiliate KTTV in Los Angeles. Gascón responded at the time that he had not yet received the case from the sheriff’s department.

The investigation into the “Dope Show” singer began after actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood, who was engaged to Manson in 2010, accused the singer of abuse on Instagram in February 2021. Wood said the alleged abuse began when the singer, 18 years her senior, molested her as a teenager. They announced their relationship in 2007, when she was 19, although she has since said it began when she was 17.

Wood had previously testified about her abuse victims before a subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee in 2018 and before the California Senate in 2019 – where she spoke in favor of the Phoenix Act, which extended the statute of limitations for cases involving victims reporting sexual abuse and domestic violence from three to five years. She did not mention Manson by name either time, but noted in her testimony in California that the statute of limitations had expired before she could file charges. The law was passed in 2020.

Woods’ allegations were the focus of the 2022 HBO series “Phoenix Rising,” which documented Woods’ rise to activist and survivor status.

After Wood named Manson as her alleged tormentor, more than a dozen women came forward with allegations of abuse against the singer, including “Game of Thrones” actress Esme Bianco and model Sarah McNeilly.

The allegations ranged from Manson isolating or raping his victims and, in some cases, using drugs and starvation as tactics to keep them under his control.

Manson has vehemently denied the allegations.

“My intimate relationships have always been completely consensual with like-minded partners,” Manson said. “Regardless of how and why, others are now choosing to misrepresent the past. That is the truth.”

Earlier this year, Manson sued Wood for defamation, claiming she “secretly recruited, coordinated and pressured potential accusers to come forward simultaneously with allegations of rape and abuse.”

In his statement on Tuesday, Gascón reminded his supporters that “LADA is committed to providing care and assistance to all victims of sexual assault, abuse and domestic violence.”
